A Ghost Pub Pilgrimage through Stroud and the Five Valleys
An A-Z Gazetteer
With thanks to Geoff Sandles and his invaluable and necessary
Stroud Valley Pubs Through Time
Amberley Publishing
And Pubs of the Old Stroud Brewery,
By Wilfred Merrett
Let these pub names and addresses
Speak for themselves,
No description or detail
(Apart from one old public house),
But let’s find them and toast them with imaginary pints
On a series of Ghost Pub Pilgrimages on foot or on bicycle,
And if you know of any others,
Please send them in …

Memories from ‘A Local’:
‘Childhood memories come back of Smith’s Crisps & drinks of lemon & dash* or ginger beer on summer evenings outside local pubs we walked to with our parents during WW2: the Golden Cross/Princess Royal/Railway Inn at Dudbridgewhere we sat outside in the gardens or by the bowling green at The Prince Albert!
After 1947 when Dad acquired a 1927 Austin, we travelled farther afield - to The Adam & Eve, at Paradise - safe to park on the main road in those days – to others such as The White Horse, Fr. Mansell, The Black Horse, Nailsworth, The New Inn on Selsley common, The Royal William, Cranham ,etc.
Sometimes Mother and children stayed in car and Dad brought drinks & crisps out to us. (*a dash of beer)
My maternal Granny lived in Atcombe Rd. South Woodchester and when we visited her in the 1940s my mother usually treated her to a pint of Albright* which an older cousin and I fetched in a jug from the Off Licence side of The Yew Tree pub next door.’
(*a light pale ale)
